When to hike the Apennines

From April to November, all 8 destinations clear our recommendation criteria. The area is quietest in January and February, with 5 of 8.

Averaged across the destinations, August is the warmest month at 23 degrees in the hiking window and January the coldest at 5.

How far apart the destinations are

The selected grid cells run from 246 metres at Amalfi Coast to 1,296 metres at Gran Sasso, with a median of 1,136 metres. Amalfi Coast clears the criteria in 12 months (all year), Gran Sasso in 9 months (all year except January, February and December).

The longest season belongs to 5 destinations, including Amalfi Coast and Mount Etna, at 12 months each; the shortest to Majella, at 8 months (from April to November).

What closes the missing months

Where a destination loses months, a critical climate component falls below the threshold at which we stop recommending a month. The main reason is snow cover for 3 of the 8 destinations. 5 are recommendable in all twelve months.

In January, the quietest month, 3 of 8 destinations are closed, all of them by snow cover.

Conditions in June

June is when the open destinations score highest on average. Hiking-window temperature then runs from 18 degrees at Gran Sasso to 23 at Amalfi Coast, and rain falls on 18 to 42 percent of days depending on the destination.

What these figures cover

Each destination is described by one selected ERA5-Land grid cell, averaged over 1991 to 2025. The figures above summarise those 8 cells. They are not a map of the whole area or of any route, and they are not a forecast.
